Our aim is to educate you to work in advanced specialist tasks in the field of ICT, focusing on two fields: Networking and Services, and Medical Technology. The studies enable you to follow the professional development of the field, both from the applied research and practical viewpoints. Continuous learning is a must in all professional tasks and ICT is one of the fastest developing technical fields.
The program is targeted for professionals in working life wishing to become a Master in Information Technology. Studies are designed and implemented in such a way that students in full-time employment can participate. Prerequisite for participation is a bachelor level degree in engineering and at least two years of working life experience is required. The student selection is based on two preliminary assignments and entrance exam in Finland (applies Joint Application in Networking and Services learning path), see details in application pages. Our intercultural program is conducted in English to allow improvement of your communication skills and get familiar with students from different countries and cultures. Your Master’s degree will directly refer to your real-life project and address both your company’s and your personal interest. The teaching is aimed at professionals both with an industry and a public sector background.
The program is divided into two fields of specialization: Networking and Services, and Medical Technology. The selection is asked in the application process. A field of specialization is started only if enough eligible students have passed the application process.
Program content (preliminary)The degree consists of Professional Studies (30 ECTS credits) and Master’s thesis project (30 ECTS credits). Studies consist of lectures, laboratory work, workshops, assignments, and projects as well as independent studying.
Student has the right to complete the studies in accordance with the curriculum for the degree in question and with the approved personal study plan. Metropolia organizes the Master’s degree studies and study guidance in such a way that the student can aim to complete the studies in one academic year. However, normally students achieve their degree in 1,5 years since the students are responsible for acquiring the partner organization for their thesis development work themselves.

Networking and Services
In the first study year, you will undertake a course in Research Methods and Skills and complete 20 ECTS from our course offerings for professional studies. Student also need to choose one Master’s level Elective course from Metropolia online course offering or from other Metropolia Master’s program. The second study year (autumn) is reserved for the Master´s Thesis. The study is usually completed in cooperation with your employer.
The Research Methods and Skills course provides you the required knowledge to prepare and facilitate a high quality Master’s thesis.
The professional courses give a broad and up-to-date knowledge on this fast developing field of networked applications.
Cyber Security gives an insight into existing and emerging technologies and challenges faced in this increasingly important field. The Fundamentals of Data Science and Machine Learning course provides the student an understanding of the methods and tools to process, visualize and analyze data for data science and machine learning applications.
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning course gives students an overview of recent developments in AI with emphasis on machine learning and reinforcement learning. The Internet of Things (IoT) course provides a comprehensive understanding of the potential IoT applications and services in different environments. The course introduces also the overall architecture of the IoT infrastructure and related frameworks and standards.
Autumn courses last from week 34 to 50, and spring courses from week 3 to 19. Courses take place during two evenings per week. The studies are offered as classroom teaching at the Karamalmi campus at Espoo.
Medical Technology
Medical technology is steadily growing field of technology in Finland. Medical Technology Professional studies focus on medical devices including software. Studies are tailored for professionals working in business, industry, and public sector, who want to deepen their knowledge, skills, and competences in medical technology to capture new career opportunities for the future. Studies enable novel career prospects for professionals, with previous degree for example from ICT, health technology, biomedical engineering, automation, electronics, or electrical engineering.
The Medical Technology Professional studies give a focused and up-to-date knowledge and skills related to medical devices. Legislation and Standards Related to Medical Devices course gives the latest information related to medical device regulation and essential standards used to fulfill the requirements originated from the regulation.
Research, Development and Innovation of Medical Devices 1 & 2 courses focuses on how systematically develop novel medical devices with genuine needs while taking clinical application environment and field of business into account. Safety-related Usability of Medical Devices course offers tools for improving usability and taking safety of use into account when developing medical devices.
Research Methods and Skills course provide the required knowledge to prepare and facilitate a high-quality Master’s thesis. Student can choose Elective course from Metropolia UAS Master’s Degree Programs or elsewhere, Elective Course can also be Master level online course.
Autumn courses last from week 34 to 50, and spring courses from week 3 to 19. The lectures and workshops are held at the Myllypuro campus (one full day every two weeks), courses include online components.
Master’s Thesis
Both specializations include Master’s thesis. In Master’s thesis, a research and development project is planned, implemented and evaluated in co-operation with working life. High-quality background information and proper R&D methods are used to develop novel practices and/or solve problems for authentic working life cases. Thesis is a written report of this project produced according to the given guidelines, the results are presented also in seminar.
